For the answer to the question above, the settlers wanted the land for themselves. 

<span>When the Native Americans already living there refused to just hand it over and move to reservations hundreds of miles away, the US government sent troops in to shoot them and take it by force, a policy that many native Americans forcibly resisted.</span>

It allowed for trade with natives, increasing profits on a new front. New products not yet seen allowed for an increase in sale and demand. Taxing the citizens there also was a boost in government income as well.

Is an government necessary?

Although this question is opinionated, I believe that a government is absolutely mandatory to have a successful society. You simply cannot count on your citizens to agree on everything and all obey laws. It is human nature to want something for nothing, which is what laws are in place to prevent. You also would not have any form of protection such as a military, which means your society would get taken over by someone wot ha government very, very quickly. To put it short, yes, a government is 100% required.<span />
