The answer is D, suffix. This is because a prefix is a phrase at the beginning of a word, while a suffix is a phrase at the end. An example of a prefix would be the phrase "pre-", which appears in words like preschool, preview, etc. An example of a suffix would be, as you mentioned, "-ly". This appears in words like happily, unfortunately, etc. The answer also isn't B, a preposition, because a preposition is a word like for, on, or after. And if you were wondering, it's not C, a root, because root words are words with no prefix or suffix. It holds the most basic meaning of any word. If you took the word lovely, you can see that it has a suffix at the end, which is "-ly". Now, if you took out the suffix, what would the word be? It would be "love". That is an example of a root word. This is why your answer would be the answer D, suffix. Now you can impress your friends, parents, and teachers with this knowledge!

Which of the following is NOT a function of a speech introduction? To gain and maintain audience attention To state a brief summ
lara [203]

The correct answer is: To establish your qualifications for speaking quuzlet.

Explicitly introducing one's qualifications to do anything at the start of a speech is not a common practice. If it happened, it would be done by someone else before the speaker steps on stage and the speech begins. Althought it may seem as an arrogant practice, a speaker may express their qualifications once having introduced themselves and the arguments to be presented.

Read the following passage. Then decide whether the student sample at the right (or below) cites the passage acceptably in MLA s
kondor19780726 [428]

Answer:

b) Unacceptable

Explanation:

The given excerpt shows the text from the original source, enabling us to identify whether the student properly followed the formatting rules of Modern Language Association (MLA) style. The in-text citation format of the MLA style is enclosing the author's last name and the page number in open- and closed-parenthesis at the end of the text.

In the given prompt, the name of the author and the page number were provided. Also, the student copied from the text verbatim. Thus, he or she should have written the direct quotation as:

"There is no such thing as a literary work or tradition which is valuable in itself" (Eagleton 11).

Alternatively, the student could have introduced the name of the author before the direct quote:

Terry Eagleton presents an interesting view on the significance of value in literature, as he states, "There is no such thing as a literary work or tradition which is valuable in itself" (11).

Therefore, the student unacceptably cites the passage in MLA style.
