In this excerpt, Sinclair denotes the dangerous conditions of the meat industry of his time (early 1900s). Among the dangers, the author denounced lack in hygiene and security conditions (no proper tools or minimal safety equipment), infections and diseases within the treatment of the product, unjust practices from the big companies, as well as the economic needs of the workers (difficult scenario to get a job, rapid urban growth, etc) . The first two highlighted sections describe very well the mentioned scenario.
