Well, the war of 1812 was probably the most challenging event faced by the United States from a direct point of view. We were severely underpowered in comparison to the great British navy, and Canada sent us packing numerous times. The war ended in a tie only because Britain didn't consider us threatening enough to make an offensive, and in reality we lost the war pretty badly.
