The issue of slavery had a lot of issues in the original constitution convention. That's the main reason for the fourteenth amendment was was constructed to address and clarify these issues.

The fourteenth amendment mainly stated that:
1- Freed slaves that were born within the US are to be considered as US citizens
2- Freed slaves are to be counted as whole members of the states and are to be given the normal citizen's rights.
