During 19th century, a lot of enslaved men and women worked in various capacities,such as working on a large agricultural plantations, house servants or field hands. In this period, the treatment of enslaved men and women was characterized by by its brutality, as they were subjected to repression, harsh punishments, and strict racial policing.

However, in order to cope with this repression and degradation of life on the plantation, enslaved people made use of various means amongst others, which are:
