His power extended from the river Elbe to today´s Catalunya (Barcelona). He invested much energy into Christianization of the Saxons. As a first medieval emperor he considered himself a continuation of Roman emperors. He was a son of Pipin III Le Bref and grandson of Charles Martel. During his reign the carolinian renaissance took place (arts, education, culture in general). After his death, his empire was divided into 3 parts.
