The SS was Hitler's military unit.  The SD was Hitler's intelligence gathering unit.  They helped Hitler by providing him with strong intelligence and military support - against "enemies" both foreign and domestic.  Without these units and groups, Hitler's plans - both within Germany but also throughout Europe - would not have been achievable.
