The cotton gin was one of the most significant inventions of the 18th century. The cotton gin is a machine that allows for the easy separation of seeds from cotton. This device allowed one person to clean anywhere fromm 300 -1,000 pounds of cotton in one day. Before this invention, a person could probably only clean one pound of cotton.

This new advancement allowed farmers to focus their attention on this crop, as the demand for cotton for textiles and other manufactured goods was highly desired. This is why many Southern states will have cotton at the center of their economies.
