It is a quote that shows how all the abuses, violent situations and injustice that Paul D suffered faced in prison, left him cold and insensitive to the point that he did not care about the death of life, nor try to save it, on the contrary he wants to be even more violent towards her, hitting life to the point of her, literally losing consciousness and stop moaning.

The metaphor "tobacco tin lodged in his chest", shows how Paul D.'s emotions are non-existent, without interfering in his life. It is as if his emotions were something inert, without movement and expression, like a can of tobacco.
