He didn't expect anything productive to come of the day because it had been later before they saw any progress.

I have not read the main source but this statement I assume means, something along the lines of what I have said

I think he meant that to be successful is to try without which implies that every time you wake up you do not think or wish about being successful it just happens without any second thought.

7. During the final year of the war, US rescue efforts saved tens of thousands of lives. In the spring of 1945, Allied forces, including millions of American soldiers defeated Nazi Germany and its Axis collaborators, ending the Holocaust.

After claiming he has a list of 205 members of the State Department who are known communists, he catapults to national prominence. Time after time, McCarthy accuses individuals from all walks of life of being communist. Even though he was extremely popular in the beginning of his search for communists, he became discredited due to this claims against the US Army.
