What led to the rise of the spirit of "manifest destiny" in the 1840s and how did that spirit show itself in the american expansionism of the decade?

The American people felt that god had gave them the authority/power to expand all the way into South America. This spirit showed itself in the gaining of Texas up until the Rio Grande, the expansion far west into the Oregon Territory, and the addition of California.
