This economic system was created as a means to to benefit the mother country (England) by gaining natural resources from North America and developing a favorable balance of trade. Essentially, the colonies economy existed to solely benefit the British.

This severely limited the American colonists trade with other countries. This angered colonists at different times, as they felt it was an unnecessary constraint implemented by the British government.
