At the end of the novel, only Tom and Daisy remain together, unscathed by the novels many tragedies and disappointments. Knowing

what you do about these two characters, why do things turn out this way? What allows Tom and Daisy to escape much of the pain of what they contributed to? Do you believe that a person is a reflection of who they are dating, meaning that Daisy is just like Tom?

Daisy has had a romantic moment with Gatsby but has always known she and Tom are inseparable. She chose to marry him for her love of money. At the same time ,Tom never leaves her but has a lover for whom he does not grieve when she dies.Tom and Daisy are, as depicted by Nick, the same kind of people, not only selfish but without any capacities for feeling true love. They live in pain and cause pain just because they have other values; money is the key thing that leads their lives.Daisy married Tom as he was the best suitor from a financial point of view.If she had ever had other feelings, she changed them in order to become as reckless as her usband. Then she is a reflection of who he is with and has been for many years.

Tom and Daisy, as Nick described them..... are selfish. They think only of themselves, and they will do anything to safeguard what belongs to them. Unfortunately, what they have are things..... they really have nothing.

When Nick meets Tom, Tom admits to his part in Gatsby's death.... in George's death. He shows no remorse and is even happy that Gatsby was killed. Nick was appalled, but he wasn't surprised.

hope this helps
