The Land Ordinance of 1785 was an Ordinance that determined how the US government would measure, divide and distribute the land that the government acquired at the end of the American Revolution. It was very important because after the Treaty of Paris the US faced difficulties gaining control of the lands and the Ordinance was a way of organizing the matter. It divided the territory into townships, the size of those townships and how it should be divided and how many acres it should have.
