This was during the time, where many people considered that Americans were drinking too  much alcohol, at the job, at home, resting, etc. Therefore temperance was when people, like women, would try to make others temperate their drinking, or make them drink less. America was becoming a "drunk" country. When women started to rally against it, they were supported and had help.
