A major cultural contribution of the Byzantine empire that means a picture made of many cubes of marble or glass is Mosaic.

Further explanation

The mosaic technique was invented around 6000 years ago in Mesopotamia. It originally used clays. The Greeks and Romans used it to decorate the floors of their palaces. But, it was the Byzantine empire who have developed the most beautiful mosaic. Their mosaics were not placed on the floors, but the walls and ceilings.

From the 5th century, Byzantine churches began to use these decorations. Between the 6th and the 11th century, they were the main art practiced by Christians in the empire. It was in Constantinople, in Thessalonica, Italy, and Egypt that the greatest number of mosaics had been found. They represented the different life events of Christ, the Angels, and other characters from the Bible. Some of them were created to honor the great emperors as well. After the fall of the empire in the 15th century, this expensive art was forgotten and replaced by simple paintings.
