Read the excerpt from "Wherefore Art Thou Romeo?” I shrugged. Shondra waited. Finally, I pained my head toward the classroom nex

t door. We both knew that my nemesis, Allison Ramon, was in there. Since the third grade, Allison and I had battled for the lead in every school play. Usually we both ended up on stage in one role or another. But tomorrow’s reading was a class assignment, and Allison wasn’t in the class. She was free to wreak havoc from the audience.
What is the connotation of the word "battled”?

I would choose the first answer, "Competed intensely."

The other choices don't make as much sense in this context. Since this excerpt seem to be based on a school setting, it is unlikely that the two characters would be fighting violently or angrily arguing. And "secretly tricked" doesn't fit this context at all. So it would be safe to say that the answer to this is the first choice.

Alona [7]

Answer:

Gabriela’s allusion to an old saying in the sentence- The stage waits for no one because as the old saying goes: "The show must go on!" - help develop this passage because It highlights her sense of importance to the cast and crew.

Explanation:

Gabriela expresses her commitment with the play and all the word that all the people involved included herself had put on it, the saying implies that the play has to be presented against all difficulties they might have to face and she is willing to keep that tradition alive not only for the possibility it represents for her to have a chance of success but to complete the teamwork.

Read "Spanish Dancer" and answer the question.
Ivanshal [37]

The answer is option D: as something proud.

In the poem "Spanish Dancer," the author Rainer Maria Rilke describes the dancer as persistent and confident. She uses the word fire as if the flames were very close to the dancer's body. Thus, the dancer moves to the music with a happy expression, passion, energy and pride.
