George Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant" features the ironic theme that, as Orwellwrites, "when the white man turns tyrant, it is his own freedom that he destroys." This issituational irony, which occurs when an action has unintended consequences that are the opposite of what was expected or desired.

Why did Miller choose the Salem Witch Trials as the basis for The Crucible?
Andre45 [30]

The McCarthy hearings were similar to the witch trials.  As in the McCarthy Hearings, these people were put on trial without any way to defend themselves. Finally, both during the McCarthy Hearings and during the Salem Witch Trials, the general public was so afraid of being accused of being a communist or a witch respectively that they did not dare question what was going on, nor put a stop to it.

Where is indirect characterization found in the short story "Nethergrave"
Bumek [7]
The stories like “A Sound of Thunder and Nethergrave” will make you understand thT are wonderful pieces of science fiction. Both stories take you on a journey. One story takes you through the past and the other takes you through a virtual world. Of the both stories I think that “A Sound of Thunder”was a better story because it had a clearer story line then the other.
