Ivan III

Known as Ivan the Great. Ruler of the City-State of Muscovy. Came to power in 1462. A skillful politician, he worked to conquer and control territories of rival Russian princes. He conquered Novgorod, abolished the town's assembly and deported the Boyar that opposed him. He worked to force Boyar loyalty. In 1480 he refused to pay tribute to the Tatars. The Tartars and Ivan the Great's armies met but did not fight. With the onset of winter, the Tartars retreated and did not attack again. He worked to rebuild the Kremlin (Russian for fortress) with his palace and three great cathedrals as a symbol of Russian power. He maintained absolute power over Russia during his rule.
