French settlers relied mostly on trade, and in order for trade to be profitable, traders needed to be able to access as many different communities and people as possible. Therefore, the French settlers relied on water routes in order to reach faraway places and people. This meant that land near water was important for them, as it provided the most convenient land for settlement.
