When Soviets launched the satellite sputnik the Americans immediately suffered one loss in the space race to the Russians .Becuase of the American defeat the American government blamed American education and a lot of funding was put into math and science to try to make up for the losses and continue the space race .also many Americans were terrified of sputnik because they were worried of weapons like inter continental ballistic missiles that could destroy America.

During his re-election campaign he promised to fulfill some demands of the Occupy movement which included reducing the gap between the rich and the poor and some tax cuts. He used this to garner votes and was eventually reelected.
