General Scott was the commander of the American troops when Van Buren ordered the Cherokee who continued to live in the east to force themselves out. Scottish troops encircled Chirokee and took them to camps from where they waited for a journey of 800 miles to the west. This journey is known as the "Trail of Tears". From October and November 1853, in groups of 1,000 people, a long journey began, partly by rail, partly by steamboats, but mostly by foot. Many were left without money, property, and more than a quarter of Chirokee was buried on the road. When they arrived at their destination they ended up on a land far inferior to the one they were forced to leave.
