She then compares their test scores against those of the other half of the students who did not get a review session. What is the dependent variable in the study
In this example, there are two variables that are being analyzed: the review session that the professor is providing and the test scores of the students. The review session is the independent variable. This is because it is the variable that we can manipulate and that we have control over. On the other hand, the test scores is the variable that <em>depends</em> on whether the students received the review session or not. This makes it the dependent variable.
