The Declaration of Independence was written in 1776 during the beginning of the American Revolution. The main author was Thomas Jefferson. In its preamble, he outlines a general philosophy of government that supports revolution to ensure natural rights. He states that certain Truths are believed to be self-evident.  First, that all Men are created equal. Second, certain unalienable Rights, such as Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, are provided by the Creator.
