Miss Ophelia's purchase of Topsy most clearly underlines that hypocrisy is everywhere. Miss Ophelia is adamantly opposed to slavery. She thinks it is a cruel practice and argues that black people are our brothers, and deserve education and religion. However, when she receives Topsy and is meant to help her learn and grow, she feels repulsed by the girl. This shows her hypocrisy, as even though she argues that slaves deserve freedom, she still considers black people inferior and has racist feelings.
It was just one of the MANY reasons that resulted in the 2nd WW. Maybe if they hadn't been so harsh towards Germany and blamed them for the cause of WW1 then the 2nd one most likely wouldn't have happened.
