The sentence "When the battle lost and won" tells the reader than a war is going on right now. This foreshadows the plot because we know what "The three" will soon meet up again in different circumstances. We are just waiting to know what circumstances. We don't have an idea an exact idea of what happens in the future, but we can tell that "the three" will once again meet up once the battle's "lost and won."
