The international community responded to South Africa's policies in the 1980s by seeking to pressure the South African Government to change its policies and end the racial oppression that existed under the Apartheid Regime. Countries and organizations around the world used economic boycotts (not buying products from South Africa), divestment (removing investment and pulling companies out of South Africa), and sanctions (seeking to punish the South African Government by preventing economic activities) to help end the policies of the Apartheid Government in South Africa.
