Turner's ideas of the frontier thesis were considered controversial in the 1890s and even today for the following reason: Turner claimed that the frontier explained a major part of the United State's character, history and culture. Furthermore, Turner claimed that the Frontier symbolized opportunities, promise, individualism and democracy for Americans. His theory was and still is controversial since there wasn't a frontier any longer and the Manifest Destiny was completed.
