Turner's ideas of the frontier thesis were considered controversial in the 1890s and even today for the following reason: Turner claimed that the frontier explained a major part of the United State's character, history and culture. Furthermore, Turner claimed that the <span>Frontier symbolized opportunities, promise, individualism and democracy for Americans. His theory was and still is controversial since there wasn't a frontier any longer and the Manifest Destiny was completed.</span>
