In writing, especially in prose, a paragraph is a group of sentences arranged in a sequence that develops a certain topic. Paragraphs begin with a new line and, often, an indentation. Each paragraph discusses a different topic, and their length may vary according to that topic or to the type of material being written. Paragraphs usually have a main statement that is further developed by support sentences. The paragraphs themselves are used to develop the main idea of the text.
An important component of the writing process is the need to vary your syntax and written rhythms to keep your reader engaged. Such variation includes word choice, tone, vocabulary, and—perhaps more than anything else—sentence structure.
