The significance of the Long Parliament was that its struggles with Charles I led to the English Civil War.</em>  Charles I was the monarch who summoned both Short and Long Parliaments in 1640 due to the fact he needed to raise money to wage the second Bishop's war against the Scotts. But when the Parliament started taking down the King's advisers, passed an act stating it was forbidden its dissolution without members consent, the friction between the Parliament and Charles I started to increase.

In January 1642, Charles I tried to detained 5 members of the Long Parliament. A year later in the midst of the tension between them both, the English Civil War broke out.

Before it, there was no parliament for 11 eons.
