A six-foot-tall person is standing next to a flagpole. The person is casting a shadow 1 1/2 feet in length, while the flagpole i
lara31 [8.8K]

Answer: 20 ft

This problem can be solved by the Thales’s theorem, which states:

Two triangles are similar when they have equal angles and proportional sides

It should be noted that to apply Thales' Theorem, it is necessary to establish the two triangles are similar, that is, that they have the corresponding angles equal or that their sides are proportional to each other.

Now, if we measure the shadow of the flagpole and the shadow of the person, at the same moment, we can use the first Thales' Theorem to calculate the height of the flagpole, knowing the height of the person.

In this case we have two similar triangles (Figure attached) where H is the height of the flagpole, h=6 ft is the height of the person, A=5 ft is the length of the shadow of the flagpole and a=1\frac{1}{2}=1.5 ft is the length of the shadow of the person.

Having this clear, we can write the following relation with both similar triangles:

\frac{H}{h}=\frac{A}{a} (1)

We know all these lengths except H, which is the value we want to to find.

So, in order to approach this problem we have to find H from equation (1):

H=\frac{A}{a}h

H=\frac{5 ft}{1.5 ft}(6 ft)

Then:

H=20 ft >>>>>This is the height of the flagpole

What is the area of this composite figure?
A. 135 cm2
B. 207 cm2
C. 249 cm2
D. 279 cm2
mariarad [96]

Answer:

249 cm^2

Step-by-step explanation:

This problem becomes easier if we subdivide the figure, find the areas of the resulting figures and then sum them up.

Draw a vertical line straight down from the edge marked "4 cm" towards the edge marked "18 cm." The resulting rectangle on the left is 15.5 cm long and (18 - 7.5) cm wide, or 15.5 by 10.5 cm. Its area is 162.75 cm^2.

Next, find the area of the rectangle on the right of the line we drew. Its width is 7.5 cm and its height (15.5 - 4) cm, resulting in an area of 86.25 cm^2.

Last, add together these two subareas: combine 86.25 cm^2 and 162.75 cm^2. The total area of the composite figure is then 249 cm^2 (answer).

The longest side of the right triangle is 2 feet more than the middle side and the middle side is 1 foot less than twice the sho
Ket [755]
A right triangle's longest side is the hypotenuse
let x=longest, y=middle, and z=shortest
x=y+2
y=2z-1
therefore x=(2z-1)+2=2z+1
find z
z^2+y^2=x^2 by Pythagorean theorem
plug in x and y in terms of z
z^2+(2z-1)^2=(2z+1)^2
z^2+4z^2-4z+1=4z^2+4z+1
subtract the right-hand side's value from the left-hand side's
z^2-8z=0
z(z-8)=0
z=0, 8
z cannot be zero as the sides must have some value to it.
Therefore the shortest side is equal to 8

Solve for m. m + 4 3 = 2 what is m
HELP MEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
Anna71 [15]

hi there user! Looks like your looking for help, so Mizuki came here to help you!

the answer is:

m is 2/3

The whole work I did:

m + 4 ÷ 3 = 2

m + 4/3 = 2

m + 4/3 - 4/3 = 2 - 4/3

m = 6/3 - 4/3

m = 2/3

Anyways hope this helped! qwq
