People vote for candidates to represent them in the decision-making process in a representative democracy.

A good example for representative democracy is the United States, wherein they elect the president and the members of the Congress. They also elect state and local officials. The elected officials are supposed to listen to their constituents and they must do what is best for the nation as a whole.
