I think there are several possibilities

The head teacher might discuss with each one the first days to know where are their weaknesses....

By looking to the results from years before

by making small tests in each subjects (without marks) to have a idea which is your strong and weak subjects....

He is also shown to be very intellectual because when he along with his men had entered the Cyclops cave all his men were frightened from the very site of this cave but he remained calm and encouraged his men and used his intelligence to enter the cave from the safest place.
