Caligula used the blood ancestry through his mother Julia the Elder to connect himself back to Julius Caesar and Octavian Augustus. He also used the adoption practice that both Caesar and Augustus had used since they both failed to have male heirs. The adoption practice allowed them to create an heir for the empire that they built. The heir, often a nephew, would then be set to inherit the empire and role as emperor.
