Answer: The northern troops used geography to their advantage by using maps and geographers to see what the terrain was like and how to out flank the Confederates. That way, they could use the land to their advantage to out smart and out flank them and attack them at a better spot or when and where they are not expecting it. They could use the swamp lands or even find a way across a river that was not known about or that the Confederates didn't know existed. They mapped out a lot of the southern terrain and greatly used it to their advantage.
