There are two basic types of plates: OCEANIC plates, which are thin and dense, and CONTINENTAL plates, which are thicker and less dense.

According to theory of tectonic plates, the denser plate usually sub ducts underneath the less dense plate. Due to this reason, the oceanic plates sub duct under continental plates, that proves oceanic plates are more dense than continental plates.
