It helps to draw a picture so you can visualize it better.

For the rug, since the area = 144, what two numbers multiplied give you 144? You might already know that 144 is a perfect square, so 12 x 12 = 144. 12 is the length of each side of the rug.

√144 = 12

12 + 3 = 15. (Add 3 because the rug only covers a portion of the floor. The entire floor = the length of the rug + the part that isn't covered)

15 x 15 = 225 ft squared (Multiply both sides of the floor to get the area.)

225 ft squared - 144 ft squared = 81 ft squared <-- your answer

A banner has a length of 10 feet and an area of 7 square feet. What is the width of the banner?
const2013 [10]

Answer:

the width is 0.7 feet

Step-by-step explanation:

Well we know that area = length * width. We know both the area and length, but not the width. Let's substitute the area and length in this equation, and substitute x for the width.

7 = 10 * x, or 7 = 10x

Now, solve for the width, or x, by dividing both sides by 10.

7(/10) = 10x(/10)

7/10 = x

Simplify 7/10 = 0.7

So the width of the banner is is 0.7 ft!
