Acid rain is an indirect result of burning fossil fuels Acid rain occurs when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are released into the atmosphere due to incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Each of these oxides is mixed with rainwater to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid. Thus, acid rain is in fact an indirect result and is not a direct result of the release of acid when burning fossil fuels. This is because oxides are formed during combustion.
