They did that  <span>politically in their jobs as governors and senators creating laws.
By creating the laws and regulations that requires the southern citizen to do a certain things, in the long run the value of what considerd as right or wrong in that area will start to change.
On top of that, governmental position also helped them to bring the technology from the northern states and enhance southern's economy.</span>

They used excommunication which is basically blacklisting someone in the name of the church, which means that he's not allowed there anymore. They also made him say that his beliefs were false. The church did that so people wouldn't believe what he was saying, the church wanted people to only believe what they taught.
