Para inicios del siglo XIX, la mayoría de las colonias españolas en América habían logrado su independencia. Sin embargo, Cuba aún se encontraba bajo dominio español al igual que la isla de Puerto Rico. Cabe destacar que Cuba era un baluarte económico y estratégico para los españoles.

No obstante, la manera en que eran tratados sus habitantes, quienes no tenían privilegios, fue caldeando los ánimos. Aunque en la isla se habían organizado guerrillas independentistas, la intervención de los Estados Unidos fue clave para el desarrollo del proceso de independencia de los cubanos.
