"Scrooge hung his head to hear his own words quoted by the Spirit, and was overcome with penitence and grief." Because this shows the actions of sorrow from scrooge, the reader knows he regrets the way he acted earlier and therefore this shows scrooge is showing that he is ashamed by his own actions.

Answer:

In this excerpt from Charles Dickens' <em>A Christmas Carol</em>, the sentence that shows that Scrooge is ashamed of his earlier attitude and behavior is the last one: <em>"Scrooge hung his head to hear his own words quoted by the Spirit, and was overcome with penitence and grief." </em>

Explanation:

In this line, especially when reading the word <u><em>penitence</em></u>, the reader can deduce that Scrooge feels pain because he regrets something he has done before, he lives this pain as a <u><em>consequence</em></u> of his behavior, as a penitence. By noticing that he feels pain, we can see how he <u><em>regrets</em></u> his previous attitude.
