The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an attempt by the federal government to overthrow the communist leader of Cuba (Fidel Castro). To do this, the FBI secretly trained Cuban exiles in order to overthrow the government. When the troops invaded, they were vastly outnumbered. When the military advisors told Kennedy to support them with air forces, he refused. Kennedy believed that using US air support would cause a strong reaction from the Soviet Union (the biggest ally of Cuba at this time). Not wanting escalation, Kennedy took this as a failed invasion.

The main cause is poverty and lack of education. They're very poor, so they can't afford school. If the children do go to school, they drop out very young to work and help earn money for the family. That's not the kind of cycle people can break out of easily. Add to that the civil war from 1960 to 1996 where the military persecuted the native people, killing up to 200,000, and they've had a pretty rough time of it.
