Answer: \dfrac{1}{6}

Step-by-step explanation:

Given: The number of persons elected  to the Board of Directors for a community organization = 3

To select person first for president and then for president, the total number of ways = ^3P_2=\dfrac{3!}{(3-2)!}=\dfrac{3!}{1!}=6

The number of ways Jack will be selected first for president and Sheila will be selected second for vice president = 1

Then , the probability that Jack will be selected first for president and Sheila will be selected second for vice president is given by :-

P=\dfrac{\text{Favorable}}{\text{Total}}=\dfrac{1}{6}

The probability is 1/6.

There is a 1/3 chance he will be elected president.  After his name is drawn, there are only 2 remaining; this makes the probability she is vice-president 1/2.  Together we have

(1/3)(1/2) = 1/6

2x-y=-6<br>3x-4y=-4<br>Solve using elimination and then substitution
Alinara [238K]
Okay, so first you are going to decide whether to solve for x or solve for y. I am going to solve for x. In order to do so, you must get x by itself.
2x-y=-6
2x=y-6[ [tex]3x-4y=-4
3x=4y-4 \\ x= \frac{4y-4}{3}
The next step is to set both equations equal to each other in order to find y.
\frac{y-\frac{y-6}{2}= \frac{4y-4}{3} \\ 3(y-6)=2(4y-4) \\ 3y-18=8y-8 \\ -10=5y \\ y=-26}{2} [/tex]

So now you know that y=-2. The next part is substitution. All you have to do is pick on of the equations and plug in the y value to get the x value.

So your answer to the question is (-4,-2). I hope I've helped you understand how to solve these types of problems. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
