The definition "Fork, n. An instrument used chiefly for the purpose of putting dead animals into the mouth." was taken from Ambrose Bierce's <em>The Devil's Dictionary</em>, first published in 1911. Bierce was an American author and satirist.

Throughout his dictionary, Bierce presents analytical definitions in a satirical way. It seems as if his intention is to shock readers and have them think and see things in a way they never tried before. If people in general are asked what a fork is and what it is used for, most will say it is a tool used to bring "food" to the mouth. But Bierce analyzes it more deeply and opens our eyes to the fact that the "food" brought to the mouth by a fork is, most of the times, a dead animal.
