Answer:

I believe it is an analytical definition.

Explanation:

The definition "Fork, n. An instrument used chiefly for the purpose of putting dead animals into the mouth." was taken from Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary, first published in 1911. Bierce was an American author and satirist.

Throughout his dictionary, Bierce presents analytical definitions in a satirical way. It seems as if his intention is to shock readers and have them think and see things in a way they never tried before. If people in general are asked what a fork is and what it is used for, most will say it is a tool used to bring "food" to the mouth. But Bierce analyzes it more deeply and opens our eyes to the fact that the "food" brought to the mouth by a fork is, most of the times, a dead animal.

solniwko [45]

Answer:

A. As a contrast to the situation in the speakers neighborhood.

Explanation:

His neighbor resided on top of his apartment. Her notes were evidently wrong, and she shrieked. He acquired a sound system to drown and contradict her "music." He realized he missed the music he heard only after moving to a new apartment.

Ralph Ellison understood music's power. He understood that music may remind us of our history, who we were, and our goals. It is also an escape. It helps drown out life's difficulties, as he did his neighbor's terrible letters. Music not only soothes, but also resurrects and enlivens.
