The south was a democratic region.
The democratic party was started by Andrew Jackson. The southern region was made by ,more whites who who were eager to maintain racism , and white supremacy and the democratic party seemed to support these ideals albeit until the days of Harry Truman and Johnson.
I think it is Many Blacks and Native Americans supported them.
