In the 16th century, a movement called "Protestant Reformation" was started in order to reform the Roman Catholic Church's beliefs and practices. Political rulers backed this reformation in order to expand their power and control.
In response to this, the Council of Trent was held. This consisted of three meetings that occurred between 1545 to 1563.
The meeting was a means for the Roman Catholics to respond to the challenges of the Protestants regarding their doctrines.
It was also held in order to solve the issues regarding abuses that were happening in the Church.
