They have to justify challenging the status quo. Jefferson's goal is to proclaim independence from the British crown, which had hitherto been considered normal and natural. Similarly, Stanton advocates women's suffrage in a society which had thought that women couldn't make political decisions.</span>

( I'm sorry I'm assuming) People are trapped in history is the person's good/bad memories and will always remind themselves of things they did in the past, and history is trapped in them is sort of like you're a part of the history and you can't change the fact that you're in it.
