    The operetta is a small opera, of lighter style, both in terms of music and of argument and is very close to other styles such as the current musical. It has many spoken moments, so it may even be confused in a first impression with a play with musical moments but it is possible to establish differences and one of the main ones is, without a doubt, the shape of the song. In operettas singing is based on classical form, while in musical pieces there is no tradition of lyric singing.

   The operetta emerged in the nineteenth century to satisfy the need for shorter and lighter stories than the increasingly serious works of the genre opera comique. Although comique implies that it is anything to laugh about, the truth is that already in its final phase I just wanted to indicate that I had only spoken parts. For example, Bizet's opera “Carmen”, being Comic opera, doesn't make anyone laugh, quite the opposite.
