Because conflict makes a story interesting. Nobody wants to hear a boring story about how somebody went to the store and bought tomatoes because that's an every day thing you don't need to hear about this because chances are you have done it. So authors use conflict to keep you on the edge of your seat. Some are better at this than others. There are different types of conflict man vs man man vs nature man v self man vs society. But these conflicts are the basis for almost every interesting story written
The reason why "good vs. evil" is a universal theme is because there are always two forces at work one for good and one for evil and for every good/evil thing there is an evil/good thing that will go up against each other until the end of time or at least until one of them is defeated, but then another good/evil thing will appear to take it place.
Example 1:
Your in high school and there is a bully and you try to stop the bully from hurting others. This makes you the good force and the bully the evil force (he/she doesn't have to be "evil" per-say just bad or mean will do).
Hooks also known as grabbers are sentences at the beginning of any argument essay or essay as a way to grab the attention of a reader. A grabber is only one sentence long and appears in the first paragraph in a argument essay/essay. So, in this case a hook for drugs and smoking would be something like.... "Did you know that drugs and smoking is one of the biggest addictive problems today?"
